About this worksheet
How-to writing is the writing form students actually use the most outside of school – directions for a game, instructions for a chore, the steps to a recipe. The structure is rule-based: a reader either CAN or CANNOT follow the procedure, and that gives students immediate, honest feedback about whether their writing worked. This worksheet teaches the four features that separate a complete how-to from a vague one.
The reference box at the top of page 1 defines all four features (materials list, numbered steps, transition words, strong verbs) and walks through a complete paper-airplane how-to that uses all four. The transition-word list (First, Next, Then, After that, Finally) gives students a ready-made vocabulary they can pull into their own how-to writing without inventing transitions from scratch.
Section A on page 1 isolates three craft moves: rewrite a vague step (‘Do the dough’) with a strong verb; add a transition word to the third step of a 5-step procedure; and identify what is missing from a how-to that lacks both a materials list and specific measurements. Section B on page 2 puts it all together – students write a complete how-to for making a peanut butter sandwich, including all four features. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample strong verbs, sample transitions, and a full sample peanut-butter-sandwich how-to. Distinct from IW-WRITING-INFORMATIONAL-001 (which describes processes in paragraph form, not numbered-step form).
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk through the paper-airplane sample – point to each of the four features as you read.
Work Section A item 1 together (students suggest strong verbs for ‘do the dough’ – knead, mix, fold).
Assign Section A items 2-3 independently. Item 3 is the most diagnostic – it tests whether students can spot a vague how-to.
Have students choose between a real peanut-butter sandwich (Section B) or a buddy-tested how-to: if class supplies allow, students actually make a sandwich following a partner’s how-to and report what went wrong.
Use the answer key on page 3 for partner review. Look for all four features in every Section B response.
