About this worksheet
Peer feedback is the comments one writer gives another about a draft to help it improve. Good feedback is kind (it respects the writer and points to the writing), specific (it names an exact part), and helpful (it suggests what to try next). This worksheet teaches students to give comments a partner can actually use, and to avoid vague or unkind ones.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sample comments and asks students to mark each helpful or unhelpful (for example, ‘The third paragraph jumps topics – maybe add a transition’ is helpful, while ‘This is just bad’ is unhelpful). The reference box defines helpful versus unhelpful feedback in general terms, using examples different from the eight Section A comments.
Section B on page 2 has students rewrite a vague and an unkind comment, write a strength comment and a specific suggestion, and explain why specific feedback helps a writer most. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill complements the Editing and Revising and Proofreading worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and agree on a class rule: comment on the writing, not the person.
Complete Section A independently, deciding helpful or unhelpful for each comment.
Have students rewrite the weak comments in Section B and compare with a partner.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Editing and Revising Worksheet for a revising mini-unit.
