Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Letter writing is one of the most concrete writing skills students can master in elementary school – the structure is rule-based, the audience is real, and the finished product is something a child can mail to a grandparent or a pen pal. This worksheet teaches the five parts of a friendly letter using a clear reference, focused identification practice, and a full letter-writing task.

The reference box at the top of page 1 defines all five parts and shows them in a complete sample letter from Naya to her Aunt Maya. Section A asks students to label five different sample phrases (a date, a ‘Dear ___,’ line, a closing, a name, and a multi-paragraph body) by their letter part – this builds vocabulary about the structure before students attempt their own.

Section B on page 2 gives students a generous 5.5-inch box to draft a friendly letter to a real recipient about something interesting that happened during the week. The prompt requires all five parts and asks for the body to be indented – reinforcing the format rule that separates a friendly letter from a casual note.

Page 3 is a complete answer key. Section A has deterministic answers (the five part names). Section B is open-response, scored on whether the student included all five parts in the correct order. A sample structure is provided so teachers can give consistent feedback across the class.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and walk through the sample letter from Naya to Aunt Maya – point to each part as you name it.

Work Section A item 1 together (the date in the top-right corner = the heading); students do items 2-5 independently.

Have students identify a real person they will write to in Section B (grandparent, pen pal, cousin, family friend); a real recipient improves engagement.

Allow 12-15 minutes for the Section B letter; circulate and ask students to point to each of the five parts as they finish.

Use the answer key on page 3 for partner review. For Section B, students swap papers and confirm all five parts are present and labeled correctly.

Optional extension: have students copy their best letter onto stationery and actually mail it.
