About this worksheet
Writers choose a level of formality to fit their reader. Formal writing is serious and polite, used for teachers, officials, or unknown readers, and it avoids slang and contractions. Informal writing is relaxed and friendly, used for friends and family, and it can use contractions and slang. This worksheet teaches students to tell the two apart and choose the right one.
Section A gives eight short examples and asks students to write formal or informal for each. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘I would be grateful if you could help me’ and ‘Hey, can you give me a hand?’, examples not reused in the items.
Section B asks students when to use formal writing, to rewrite an informal request as formal, to name two features of informal writing, and to explain why matching formality matters. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill sharpens audience awareness.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and contrast a formal and an informal way to say the same thing.
Complete Section A independently – have students picture the reader for each example.
Work Section B item 10 together: rewrite an informal request as formal.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
