About this worksheet
Figurative language uses words in a non-literal way to paint a picture or stir a feeling. Most worksheets ask students to find it in someone else’s writing; this one focuses on the writer’s side – using simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole to make their own writing vivid.
Section A gives eight examples (The stars danced across the sky. / Her smile was as bright as the sun. / My backpack weighs a ton.) and asks students to name the type. The set has two of each device so students learn each pattern – like/as for simile, is for metaphor, human actions for personification, obvious exaggeration for hyperbole. The reference box defines the four with its own examples not reused in any item.
Section B is productive: students write a simile for a fast car, a metaphor for a busy classroom, a personification of wind or rain, and a hyperbole about being hungry. Page 3 is a complete answer key with samples. The skill lifts descriptive and narrative writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students spot the like/as in the simile and the is in the metaphor.
Complete Section A independently – have students name the signal that gives each type away.
Work Section B item 1 together: write a simile for a fast car before students continue.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any on-type, original example.
