About this worksheet
When students write to inform or persuade, they use both facts and opinions. A fact can be proven true (Water freezes at 32 degrees); an opinion is what someone thinks and cannot be proven (Winter is the best season). The key writing move is using facts to support opinions so the writing convinces the reader. This worksheet teaches that skill.
Section A gives eight statements (the Pacific is the largest ocean; summer is the most fun season) and asks students to label each fact or opinion, balanced four and four. The reference box teaches the difference and the support-your-opinion move with its own examples not reused in the items.
Section B is productive: students write a fact and an opinion about their school, write an opinion about recess backed by a fact, and explain why writers support opinions with facts. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill strengthens persuasive and informational writing and complements the reading-side fact-and-opinion skill.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and test a few statements: can it be proven (fact) or not (opinion)?
Complete Section A independently – have students look for signal words like best and should.
Work Section B item 3 together: state an opinion about recess and add a supporting fact.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Persuasive Writing Worksheet or the Using Text Evidence Worksheet for a writing mini-unit.
