About this worksheet
Editing and revising are two different jobs that students often confuse. Editing fixes the small things — spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar. Revising changes the bigger things — word choice, sentence variety, missing details, overall meaning. Strong writers do both, and they do them in the right order. This worksheet keeps the two moves separate so students see the contrast clearly.
Section A gives students three short paragraphs (a recess game, an after-school library trip, a science experiment) with multiple errors per paragraph. Students cross out and correct each error. The mistakes target the most common elementary trouble spots: capitalization after a period, missing commas in a list, subject-verb agreement, homophones (a/an, then/than), and missing apostrophes. The reference example uses a weather sentence so the modeled errors are in a different domain than any assessed paragraph.
Section B flips to revising. Students take a deliberately flat sentence (“The dog was happy”) and rewrite it three different ways: once by adding a sensory detail, once by replacing the verb with a stronger one, and once by combining the sentence with a follow-up. That three-revision structure forces students to try different revision moves rather than always reaching for the same one.
