About this worksheet
Wordy writing uses extra words that do not add meaning, while concise writing gives the same idea in fewer, clearer words. Being concise does not mean dropping details – it means cutting words that do no work. This worksheet gives students practice spotting wordiness and trimming it from their own sentences.
Section A gives eight sentences (She ran quickly to the bus; In my own personal opinion, I think the movie was good) and asks students to label each wordy or concise. The reference box teaches the idea with phrases like ‘in the event that’ shrinking to ‘if’, examples not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to rewrite three wordy sentences and explain why concise writing is clearer. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample rewrites. The skill builds toward revising and editing strong, readable writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and cross out the empty words in the wordy examples together.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘do all these words earn their place?’
Work Section B item 9 together: rewrite the wordy sentence in fewer words.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check, noting that other concise rewrites are possible.
