About this worksheet

A closing sentence is the last sentence of a paragraph. It wraps up the paragraph by restating the main idea in a new way or giving a final thought, so the reader feels the paragraph is finished. A weak ending just stops or adds a brand-new idea. This worksheet teaches students to recognize and write strong closing sentences.

Section A asks students to imagine a paragraph about why dogs make good pets and decide whether each of eight sentences would be a good closing sentence. The good ones wrap up the topic with phrases like ‘overall’ and ‘in conclusion’; the weak ones change the subject (Cats are also nice; My favorite color is blue) or add an unrelated detail. The reference box teaches the rule with a recess example not reused in the items.

Section B is productive: students write closing sentences for four paragraph topics (why reading is fun, a favorite season, how to stay healthy, why teamwork matters). Page 3 is a complete answer key with samples. The skill complements topic sentences and conclusions.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and note the closing-sentence starters: overall, in conclusion, all in all.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask if each sentence wraps up the dog-pet topic.

Discuss the weak items (Cats are also nice; My favorite color is blue) and why they fail.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any sentence that wraps up the topic.

Pair with the Topic Sentences Worksheet or the Writing Conclusions Worksheet for a paragraph mini-unit.
