About this worksheet
Many elementary writers stare at a blank page because they have not been taught how to gather ideas BEFORE drafting. Brainstorming is the pre-writing phase that loads a student’s working memory with material before they have to organize it. This worksheet teaches four common strategies and gives students a structured place to try each one.
The reference box at the top of page 1 defines all four strategies. LISTING is the fastest – ten ideas in 60 seconds, even silly ones. WEB (also called a cluster) is the most visual – the topic in the middle with branches of related ideas. FREE-WRITE is the most generative – a 3-minute timer and no stopping, no erasing. 5W QUESTIONS is the most structured – Who, What, When, Where, and Why questions about the topic that often map directly to paragraphs.
Section A on page 1 walks students through each strategy on a different topic – LISTING on ‘a perfect classroom,’ WEB on ‘a hero,’ FREE-WRITE on ‘my favorite food,’ and 5W QUESTIONS on ‘a memorable trip.’ Each strategy gets its own writing box so students can compare the kinds of ideas each one produces.
Section B on page 2 is the application task – students pick TWO of the four strategies and use both on a single topic (‘an animal I want as a class pet’), labeling which strategy they used for each set of ideas. This builds the meta-cognitive habit of choosing the right pre-writing tool for the writing task ahead. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample ideas for every strategy.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and demonstrate LISTING on the board with a different topic (e.g., ‘lunch foods’) so students see ten ideas appear quickly.
Assign Section A item 1 (LISTING on ‘a perfect classroom’) with a 60-second timer; this builds the speed habit.
Work Section A item 2 (WEB on ‘a hero’) on the board as a class draw so students see the branch structure.
Assign Section A items 3 (FREE-WRITE) and 4 (5W QUESTIONS) independently. Time the free-write strictly – 3 minutes, no stopping.
Section B is the meta-cognitive task. Have students explain why they picked the two strategies they did. Some students prefer visual (WEB), others prefer verbal (FREE-WRITE).
Use the answer key on page 3 for partner review. Remind students that brainstorms have no wrong answers.
