About this worksheet
A book report sounds easy until a student stares at a blank page. The trick is to know that every good book report has the same five parts, in roughly the same order. This worksheet names those parts, shows what each one looks like in two real children’s books, and then walks students through drafting each part for a book of their own choosing.
Page 1 opens with a reference box that defines the five parts – title and author, setting, characters, plot summary, and recommendation – and walks through Charlotte’s Web as a worked example so students see what each part looks like in practice. Section A then gives five sentences from a different book (The Lemonade War) and asks students to label which book-report part each sentence belongs in.
Page 2 is the drafting template. Students pick a book they have read and fill in four short boxes: title/author/pages, setting and characters, plot summary in 2-3 sentences, and a recommendation with one specific reason. The boxes are sized to keep the report focused and readable.
Page 3 is the answer key. Section A lists the five book-report part labels in order. Section B is a checklist of what each part should contain – student answers vary widely since they pick their own book.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point to each part of the Charlotte’s Web worked example.
Do Section A item 1 together (Title and Author), and let students complete items 2-5 independently.
For Section B, have students name the book they will report on BEFORE writing – jot it on the title line first.
Allow 15-20 minutes for the Section B drafting; remind students to use 2-3 sentences for plot, not just one.
Have students share their plot summary box with a partner; partners check that the order of events is clear and no major spoiler ruins the ending.
Optional extension: students copy their finished Section B into a clean one-page final draft to display in the classroom or share at home.
