About this worksheet
Every story has a plot, the order of events from start to finish. The beginning introduces the characters and setting and starts a problem, the middle is where the characters try to solve it, and the end wraps everything up. This worksheet helps students recognize and plan the three parts of a plot.
Section A on page 1 gives eight story events – meeting the character, the problem appearing, the exciting climax, the happy ending, and more – and asks students to write beginning, middle, or end. The reference box teaches the three parts so students can apply them.
Section B on page 2 asks students to name the three parts, tell which is longest, describe a story problem, and plan a short story with one sentence for each part. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill pairs with character and setting writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and retell a familiar story by its beginning, middle, and end.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘where in the story does this happen?’
Discuss why the middle is usually the longest part.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
