About this worksheet
A short sentence tells a little; adding details tells a lot more. Writers expand a sentence by answering questions about it – who, what, when, where, why, and how – and each answer paints a clearer picture for the reader. This worksheet teaches students to recognize and add those details.
Section A gives eight detail phrases (at the beach; yesterday morning; the tall firefighter; because she was hungry) and asks which question each answers: who, what, when, where, why, or how. The reference box teaches the six questions with a ‘The dog ran’ expansion example not reused in the items.
Section B is productive: students expand short sentences by adding details that answer specified questions, and add a why detail. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample expanded sentences. The skill builds descriptive and narrative writing and pairs with sensory details.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and expand ‘The dog ran’ together by asking where, when, and how.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask which question each phrase answers.
Work Section B item 1 together: expand ‘The bird sang.’ with a where and a when detail.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any clear, on-question detail.
Pair with the Sensory Details Worksheet or the Descriptive Writing Worksheet for a craft mini-unit.
