About this worksheet
Choosing the right meaning from a multiple-choice list trains a specific skill: read the sentence, picture the situation, and reject the choices that do not fit. It is the everyday move readers make on standardized tests and in any independent reading where they meet an unfamiliar word.
Section A presents 8 single-sentence items. The target word is in ALL CAPS, and three meanings are given in parentheses; students write the best meaning on the line. Section B raises the difficulty with 6 two-sentence passages that pack in more context clues; the same three-choice format keeps the task focused on careful elimination.
The reference box at the top of page 1 explains the strategy with a model item (RELUCTANT) and walks through eliminating the two distractors. Page 3 is a complete answer key in compact format.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk through the RELUCTANT example, naming the clue that rules out ‘eager’ and ‘ready.’
Work Section A independently; remind students to read the full sentence before testing each choice.
Move to Section B and model item 9 together; show how the second sentence adds a clue that locks in the answer.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Context Clues Vocabulary Worksheet for the open-response version of this skill, or the Multiple Meaning Words Worksheet to extend context-based word work.
