About this worksheet
A category is a group of words that share something in common – apple, banana, and grape are all fruits. Sorting words into categories builds the semantic networks that make vocabulary stick and helps students see how words relate. This worksheet practices both naming a category and spotting the odd word out.
Section A gives eight word groups (shirt/pants/jacket/socks; circle/square/triangle/oval; lion/tiger/bear/wolf) and asks students to name the category each shares. The groups span clothes, shapes, days, vegetables, instruments, weather, animals, and numbers, so students generate a range of category labels. The reference box models the skill with a fruits example not reused in any group.
Section B reverses the thinking: each group has one word that breaks the pattern (apple/orange/carrot/banana – carrot is not a fruit), and students write the word that does not belong. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill supports classifying, analogies, and reading comprehension.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and sort a quick set of words into a category together.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘what do all these words have in common?’
Work Section B item 9 together: in apple, orange, carrot, banana, the carrot does not belong.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Analogies Worksheet or the Synonyms and Antonyms Worksheet for a word-relationships mini-unit.
