Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A word association is a connection between two words that naturally go together because they are related – rain goes with umbrella, doctor with hospital. Words can be linked as a thing and where it is found, a person and their tool, or a cause and result. Building these connections strengthens vocabulary and memory. This worksheet teaches students to find and make associations.
Section A gives eight words, each with three choices, and asks students to pick the one that goes best (bee goes with honey, not table or road). The reference box teaches association with a bird-and-nest example not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to supply their own associated word for six words (dog, beach, doctor, birthday). Page 3 is a complete answer key with samples. The skill supports vocabulary growth and complements categories and analogies.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and brainstorm a few word pairs that go together.
Complete Section A independently – have students pick the most closely connected word.
Work Section B item 9 together: a word that goes with dog could be bone or leash.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any sensible association.
Pair with the Word Categories Worksheet or the Analogies Worksheet for a word-relationships mini-unit.
