What this assessment checks
The three families of vowel spelling a student meets once short and long vowels are secure:
- Vowel teams: ai, oa, ee, ay, ea, ow, ue, ie, ui, oe
- R-controlled vowels: ar, er, ir, or, ur
- Diphthongs and the oo pattern: oi, oy, ou, ow, oo
How to use it
Give it after vowel teams and r-controlled vowels have both been taught. Section B is deliberately short and repetitive — r-controlled vowels are a small closed set, and a student either owns them or does not.
Reading the results
Vowel teams are the largest source of spelling error in grades 2-4, so treat Section A as the diagnostic. A student who writes the right sound with the wrong team — oa for ow in snow — has heard correctly and needs pattern sorting rather than more phonics. Section B misses usually mean er, ir and ur have not been separated as three spellings of one sound.
