Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A toponym is a word that comes from the name of a place, like ‘hamburger’ from Hamburg or ‘marathon’ from the town of Marathon. This worksheet teaches students to recognize toponyms and to tell them apart from eponyms, which come from people’s names.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box explains toponyms with examples and contrasts them with eponyms. Section A has eight items connecting words to their places. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions.

Page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for every item and sample responses. The worksheet pairs well with the Eponyms and Word Origins worksheets.
