Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Redundancy, also called a tautology, means using extra words that repeat an idea already stated, such as ‘free gift’ or ‘PIN number.’ Good writing is concise, so a careful writer trims words that add no new meaning. This worksheet helps students notice when one word already includes the meaning of another.

Section A on page 1 gives eight phrases, and students write yes or no for whether each is redundant. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘free gift’ and ‘PIN number’ examples, so the assessed phrases stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 asks what redundancy means, why writers remove redundant words, how to test a phrase, and to shorten a redundant phrase. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on choosing precise words.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and explain why ‘free gift’ repeats itself.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask if one word already covers the other.

Discuss how trimming redundant words makes writing stronger.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Choosing Precise Words Worksheet or the General and Specific Words Worksheet.
