About this worksheet
A synonym means the same or nearly the same as another word; an antonym means the opposite. Students often study these one at a time, but the real skill is telling the two relationships apart and producing each on demand. This worksheet brings synonyms and antonyms together so students practice both in one place.
Section A gives eight word pairs (happy/glad, fast/slow, begin/start, empty/full, and so on) and asks students to label each pair synonyms or antonyms, balanced four and four. The reference box defines both relationships with big/large and hot/cold examples and a can-they-swap test, but does not reuse the Section A pairs.
Section B asks students to produce a word: write a synonym for happy, an antonym for hot, a synonym for big, and so on, alternating the two tasks. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers, since several correct words are possible. The skill strengthens word choice in writing and comprehension in reading.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and use the swap test: can the two words trade places and keep the meaning?
Complete Section A independently – have students decide same or opposite for each pair.
Work Section B item 9 together: a synonym for happy could be glad or joyful.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any correct synonym or antonym.
Pair with the Synonyms Worksheet or the Antonyms Worksheet to go deeper on one relationship.
