Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Synecdoche is a figure of speech in which a part of something stands for the whole, or the whole stands for a part, such as ‘all hands on deck’ for sailors or ‘nice wheels’ for a car. Writers use it to make language vivid and to say a lot in only a few words. This worksheet helps students recognize synecdoche and explain what each example really means.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences that each use synecdoche, and students write what the bold word stands for. The reference box teaches the device with different examples, so the assessed sentences stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to define synecdoche, explain how it makes writing vivid, interpret a common example, and write a sentence of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on metaphor and other figurative language.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and discuss how a part can stand for a whole.
Complete Section A independently – ask what larger thing each bold word names.
Share answers and talk about why writers use synecdoche.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Similes and Metaphors Worksheet or the Hyperbole Worksheet.
