About this worksheet
A syllable is a beat in a word, and each beat has one vowel sound. Counting syllables helps young readers break longer words into smaller, readable parts and spell them more easily. This worksheet teaches the chin-drop trick – one chin drop per beat – and gives students plenty of words to practice on.
Section A lists eight words of one to four syllables (dog, pencil, elephant, rabbit, sun, computer, window, watermelon) and asks students to write the number of syllables in each. The range from one to four beats lets students feel the difference clearly. The reference box teaches the rule with cat, ta-ble, and but-ter-fly examples not reused in any item.
Section B is short-answer: students count syllables in banana, confirm that each syllable has one vowel sound, count the beats in their own name, compare cat and kitten, count happy, and recall the counting trick. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill supports decoding, spelling, and reading fluency.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and practice the chin-drop trick on a few names together.
Complete Section A independently – have students say each word slowly and count the beats.
Work Section B item 9 together: banana has three beats (ba-na-na).
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
