Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word, and some suffixes turn a base word into a verb – a word that shows action. Four common verb-making suffixes are -ize (to make or become), -ify (to make), -en (to make more), and -ate (to do or become). This worksheet helps students build verbs and grow their word power.
Section A on page 1 gives eight base words and asks students to add the right verb-making suffix and write the new verb. The reference box teaches the four suffixes with class, pure, short, and motive examples that are not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks students what a verb-making suffix does, to name two of them, and to write sentences using brighten and organize. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward stronger word choice and spelling.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and say each example base word and its verb.
Complete Section A independently – have students try each suffix to see which fits.
Work Section B item 11 together: write a sentence using ‘brighten’.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.
Pair with the Suffixes That Make Nouns Worksheet or the Suffixes Worksheet.
