About this worksheet

A suffix is an ending added to a word to change its meaning or its job, and some suffixes turn other words into nouns – words that name a person, place, thing, or idea. Common noun-making suffixes are -ness, -ment, -tion, -ity, -er, -ship, and -hood. This worksheet teaches students to build nouns with these endings.

Section A gives eight base words with a suffix to add (kind + ness; pay + ment) and asks students to write the new noun. The reference box teaches the idea with happy to happiness, move to movement, and teach to teacher, words not reused in the items.

Section B asks students what a noun-making suffix does, to add a suffix to ‘govern’, to name two noun suffixes, and to make a noun from ‘build’. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill supports word building and spelling.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and build a noun from a base word together.

Complete Section A independently – have students add the given suffix to each base.

Work Section B item 10 together: add a suffix to ‘govern’ to make a noun.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Suffixes Worksheet or the Base Words Worksheet for a word-parts mini-unit.
