About this worksheet
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word to change its meaning or job. Several suffixes turn a word into an adverb – most often -ly (quick becomes quickly), and also -ward (homeward) and -wise (clockwise). This worksheet completes the suffix family alongside the worksheets on suffixes that make adjectives, nouns, and verbs.
Section A on page 1 gives eight base-word-plus-suffix combinations and asks students to write the finished adverb, including spelling changes (easy plus -ly becomes easily; simple plus -ly becomes simply). The reference box explains the suffixes and the common spelling changes with examples different from the eight Section A items.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define a suffix, name the most common adverb suffix, describe the y-to-i change, and write their own adverb and sentence. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds on prefixes, root words, and the other suffix worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and review the spelling changes (y to i, drop the e).
Complete Section A independently, writing the finished adverb for each pair.
Discuss Section B item 11 (the y-to-i change) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Suffixes That Make Adjectives or Suffixes That Make Verbs worksheets.
