About this worksheet
A suffix is an ending added to a base word to change its meaning or its job. Some suffixes turn a base word into an adjective – a word that describes a noun. This worksheet teaches five common adjective suffixes – -ful (full of), -less (without), -ous (full of), -able (able to be), and -y (having) – and the small spelling changes that come with them.
Section A gives eight base-word-plus-suffix combinations (joy + ful; hope + less) and asks students to build the adjective, watching for doubled letters and dropped silent e. The reference box teaches the suffixes with helpful, careless, and sunny, words not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to name the part of speech the suffixes create, define -less, build an adjective from ‘danger’ in a sentence, and write a -y adjective with a noun it could describe. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward word parts and word building.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and connect each suffix to its meaning (full of, without, able to be, having).
Complete Section A independently – remind students to check for doubled letters and dropped silent e.
Work Section B item 11 together: add a suffix to ‘danger’ and use the adjective in a sentence.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Suffixes That Make Nouns Worksheet or the Prefixes Worksheet for a word-parts mini-unit.
