About this worksheet
English words follow patterns that help students spell and read them. A silent e makes a vowel say its name (cap to cape); a consonant doubles after a short vowel before -ing or -ed (hop to hopping); ck comes after a short vowel (back); and igh often spells the long-i sound (light). This worksheet teaches four high-frequency patterns.
Section A gives eight words (cake, running, truck, bright) and asks students to name the pattern each shows: silent e, double consonant, ck, or igh, with two of each. The reference box teaches the four patterns with its own examples not reused in the items.
Section B applies the patterns: students explain what silent e does, add -ing to ‘run,’ spell a long-i word, recall when to use ck, and form silent-e and double-consonant words. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill strengthens spelling and decoding.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and show how a silent e changes cap to cape.
Complete Section A independently – have students look at the ending of each word for the pattern.
Work Section B item 10 together: add -ing to ‘run’ by doubling the n to make ‘running.’
