About this worksheet
A mnemonic is a memory trick that helps you remember something, such as how to spell a hard word. A good spelling mnemonic uses a short, easy phrase whose letters or words match the tricky word, or hides a smaller word inside the big one (there is ‘a rat’ in separate). This worksheet teaches students to use and create spelling mnemonics.
Section A on page 1 gives eight mnemonics and asks students to write the tricky word each one helps spell (for example, ‘a piece of pie’ points to piece, and ‘Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move’ spells rhythm). The reference box explains how mnemonics work with a ‘because’ example separate from the eight Section A words.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define a mnemonic, explain how it helps, and write their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill complements the Spelling Patterns and Silent Letters worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and share a favorite spelling mnemonic.
Complete Section A independently, writing the word each mnemonic helps spell.
Have students invent a mnemonic in Section B and share it with a partner.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
