About this worksheet

Putting things into groups is where vocabulary starts. Before a child can say what a word means, they can say what it is like — and a cat, a dog and a cow going in one box while a bus, a car and a train go in another is that idea made visible.

There is no passage to read: the two group words are read aloud together first, and a child copies the one that fits. Section A gives six pictures and a two-word bank; Section B is a cut-and-paste sort with two labeled boxes and eight picture tiles, four for each box.

The answer key on page three gives the group for all six pictures in order, and lists by name the four tiles that belong in each box.

How to Use This Lesson

Print the worksheet. The word bank is in the box on page one.

Read the two group words aloud together before students begin.

For Section B, cut the tiles apart along the dashed lines first.

Check the answers against page three.
