Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Some words have silent letters – letters that are written but not heard when you say the word. Silent letters make English words tricky to spell. Common ones include the silent k (knee), silent b (lamb), silent w (write), silent h (hour), and silent gh (night). This worksheet teaches students to notice silent letters and spell these words.
Section A gives eight words (knife, comb, wrist, hour) and asks students to write the silent letter in each. The set covers the common silent-k, silent-b, silent-w, and silent-h patterns. The reference box teaches silent letters with knee and lamb examples not reused in the items.
Section B applies the skill: students define a silent letter, find the silent letter in knee, lamb, and write, confirm you do not hear it, and supply another silent-letter word. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill strengthens spelling and reading of tricky words.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and say knee, noting the silent k.
Complete Section A independently – have students say each word slowly to find the silent letter.
Work Section B item 14 together: brainstorm more silent-letter words as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Spelling Patterns Worksheet or the Long and Short Vowel Sounds Worksheet for a word-study mini-unit.
