About this worksheet
Two words can mean almost the same thing but feel very different. Tired and exhausted both describe being out of energy — but exhausted is much stronger. When students start noticing those shades, their writing gets sharper and their reading comprehension deepens, because they catch the writer’s intent more accurately.
Section A gives students 8 sets of three related words (happy, content, joyful) and asks them to write the words in order from weakest to strongest. Section B raises the difficulty: students see a sentence with a missing word and three shade-related choices, and pick the one that fits the situation best.
The reference box at the top of page 1 defines shades of meaning with a heat-words example (warm, hot, scorching). Page 2 is a complete answer key in compact format with the correct ranking for each set and the best-shade pick for each sentence.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to act out warm, hot, and scorching with their faces.
Work Section A independently or with a partner; encourage students to whisper each word with the matching intensity to feel the difference.
Move to Section B and model item 9 aloud; show how the sentence clue ‘could barely stand’ rules out the weakest choice.
Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.
Pair with the Synonyms Worksheet or Word Meaning in Context Worksheet for additional precision-of-meaning practice.
