About this worksheet
Sensory words are describing words that appeal to one of the five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Writers use them so readers can picture, hear, smell, taste, or feel what is happening, making writing vivid and real. This worksheet teaches students to identify which sense a word appeals to.
Section A gives eight sensory words (sparkling, salty, buzzing) and asks students to name the sense each appeals to. The reference box teaches the idea with the words crunchy and glowing, which are not reused in the items; the answer key notes that a few words can fit more than one sense.
Section B asks students to define sensory words, write a smell word in a sentence, explain why writers use them, and write a sentence mixing two senses. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill strengthens descriptive word choice in writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and name a sensory word for each of the five senses.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask which sense each word makes them imagine.
Work Section B item 12 together: build a sentence that mixes two senses.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any reasonable sense a word fits.
Pair with the Shades of Meaning Worksheet or the Similes and Metaphors Worksheet for a descriptive-writing mini-unit.
