About this worksheet
Semantic change is the way a word’s meaning shifts over time. Three common kinds are broadening, when a meaning widens to cover more; narrowing, when a meaning shrinks to cover less; and shift, when a meaning moves to something new – for example, ‘awful’ once meant full of awe. This worksheet helps students compare old and new meanings and name the kind of change.
Section A on page 1 gives eight words with their old and new meanings, and students write whether each change is broadening, narrowing, or shift. The reference box teaches the three kinds with different examples, so the assessed words stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to define semantic change, contrast broadening with narrowing, give another meaning of a familiar word, and supply an example of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on word origins and multiple-meaning words.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and compare the old and new meanings of ‘awful.’
Complete Section A independently – have students ask whether the meaning got wider, narrower, or moved.
Discuss why word meanings drift as language is used.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Word Origins Worksheet or the Multiple Meaning Words Worksheet.
