Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

The schwa is a soft, lazy vowel sound that sounds like ‘uh.’ It happens in a syllable that is not stressed – the quiet part of a word – and it can be spelled with any vowel. Because of the schwa, the vowel students hear is not always the one they would expect, which is why it is worth practicing.

Section A on page 1 gives eight words, each with two vowels named, and asks students to write the vowel that makes the schwa ‘uh’ sound. The reference box teaches the idea with about and sofa, which are not reused in any item.

Section B on page 2 asks students what the schwa is, what kind of syllable it lives in, whether it can be spelled more than one way, and which vowels say schwa in banana. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward accurate decoding and spelling.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and stretch out about (uh-BOUT) and sofa (SO-fuh).

Complete Section A independently – have students say each word slowly to hear the lazy ‘uh’.

Work Section B item 12 together: find the schwa vowels in banana.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Long and Short Vowel Sounds Worksheet or the Syllables Worksheet.
