Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Once students start spotting common roots, every unfamiliar word becomes a small puzzle they can solve from the inside out. This worksheet pulls fourteen of the most useful Greek and Latin roots into one short practice set so students can see the pattern across many subject areas.

Section A introduces eight roots embedded in everyday words: astro, aqua, port, vis, aud, dict, ject, and therm. Section B adds six more roots that often appear in science and language arts texts: spect, struct, script, graph, mit, and photo. The format is the same in both sections: read the word, look at the root in parentheses, and write what the root means.

The reference box at the top of page 1 defines root word and gives three classroom-friendly examples using bio, geo, and tele. Page 2 is a compact two-column answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students to name one more word that contains bio, geo, or tele.

Work the first item of Section A together to model the move; the word is given, the root is in parentheses, and the student writes the meaning.

Have students complete the rest of Section A and all of Section B independently.

Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Prefixes Worksheet and the Suffixes Worksheet for a complete word-parts unit.
