Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Two words rhyme when they end with the same sound – cat and hat, ring and sing. Rhyming is about sound, not spelling, so words can rhyme even when spelled differently (blue and shoe). This worksheet builds the early listening skill that underlies poems, songs, and reading.
Section A gives eight word pairs and asks students to decide whether each pair rhymes (frog and log; cake and rain). The set mixes clear rhymes with near-misses so students listen carefully to the ending sound. The reference box teaches rhyming with cat/hat and blue/shoe examples not reused in the items.
Section B is productive: students write a word that rhymes with each of six words (cat, play, night, ball, snow, king). Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample rhymes. The skill supports phonics, reading fluency, and poetry.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and say a few rhyming pairs so students hear the ending sound.
Complete Section A independently – have students say each pair out loud before deciding.
Work Section B item 9 together: a word that rhymes with cat could be hat or bat.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any real word that rhymes.
Pair with the Syllables Worksheet or the Poetry Elements Worksheet for a word-play mini-unit.
