Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Reduplication is forming a word by repeating a sound, either exactly or with a small change. There are three kinds: exact (bye-bye), rhyming (hokey-pokey), and vowel-change (tick-tock). These playful words are common in English, and this worksheet teaches students to spot them and tell them from compound words.

Section A on page 1 gives eight words and asks students to mark each reduplication or not (for example, flip-flop and chitchat are reduplication, while notebook and rainbow are compound words). The reference box explains the three kinds with examples different from the eight Section A words.

Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define reduplication, name the three kinds, contrast it with compound words, and write their own examples. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill joins anagrams, palindromes, and rhyming words in the word-play set.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and say a few reduplicated words out loud for fun.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘do the two halves echo each other?’

Discuss Section B item 11 (reduplication vs compound words) as a class.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Compound Words Worksheet or the Rhyming Words Worksheet.
