Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A pun is a joke or play on words that uses a word with two meanings, or two words that sound alike, to create humor or surprise. Puns turn up in jokes, riddles, ads, and headlines. This worksheet helps students spot exactly which word does the double duty in a pun.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. Section A has eight puns, and students write the word that creates the wordplay in each one. The reference box teaches the idea with two different example puns, so the eight items stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions, including explaining a pun and writing one of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. This worksheet joins the Word Play set alongside anagrams, oxymorons, and spoonerisms.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and enjoy the two example puns together.

Complete Section A on page 1 independently, writing the wordplay word.

Discuss which puns use two meanings and which use sound-alike words.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Multiple Meaning Words Worksheet or the Homophones Worksheet.
