About this worksheet
A proverb is a short, well-known saying that gives advice or states a general truth about life, and it usually means more than its literal words. This worksheet teaches students what a proverb is and how to find the life lesson behind eight familiar sayings – a skill that supports reading comprehension and cultural literacy.
Section A lists eight common proverbs (The early bird catches the worm; Don’t judge a book by its cover; Actions speak louder than words) and asks students to match each to its meaning from a lettered box (A-H) on the next page. Because some proverbs share a theme, students must read each meaning carefully. The reference box defines a proverb with a look-before-you-leap example not used as an item.
Section B is short-answer. Students define a proverb, explain why proverbs mean more than their words, interpret ‘Practice makes perfect,’ and share and explain a proverb they know. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds figurative-language and inference ability.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and unpack ‘Look before you leap’ together.
Have students read the eight proverbs in Section A, then the A-H meanings, before matching.
Work Section A item 1 together: ‘The early bird catches the worm’ means being early or prepared brings rewards.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Idioms Worksheet or the Types of Figurative Language Worksheet for a figurative-language mini-unit.
