Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Prefixes are one of the most powerful tools a reader has for unlocking unfamiliar vocabulary. When a student can recognize that un- means not or that re- means again, a long word stops being scary and starts being a short word with a hint at the front.

Section A is a builder drill: students take a prefix and a base word and write the new combined word on the line. The ten items use the most classroom-useful prefixes: un-, re-, pre-, mis-, dis-, sub-, super-, over-, and under-. Section B reverses the move; students read a complete word and write what the prefix contributes to the meaning.

The reference box at the top of page 1 defines prefix and lists four common prefixes with their meanings. Page 2 is a compact two-column answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and have students share one more example word for each of the four listed prefixes.

Work Section A independently as a 5-7 minute warm-up; the format is fast and rewards confident spelling.

Move to Section B and model the first item together; emphasize peeling off the prefix to reveal the base word.

Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Suffixes Worksheet and the Root Words Worksheet for a complete word-parts unit.
