About this worksheet
Some prefixes tell how many, and knowing them unlocks the meaning of many words. Uni- means one (unicycle), bi- means two (bicycle), tri- means three (triangle), quad- means four, and multi- means many. When students see a number prefix at the front of a word, they can guess part of its meaning. This worksheet teaches the common number prefixes.
Section A gives eight words with a number prefix (uniform, tripod, biweekly) and asks how many the prefix means: 1, 2, 3, 4, or many. The reference box teaches the prefixes with unicycle and tricycle examples not reused in the items.
Section B applies the skill: students count a tricycle’s wheels, define uni- and multi-, count a bicycle’s wheels and a triangle’s sides, and name the prefix for four. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill grows vocabulary by teaching how prefixes carry meaning.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and connect each prefix to a familiar word (bicycle, tricycle).
Complete Section A independently – have students spot the number prefix and recall its meaning.
Work Section B item 9 together: a tricycle has three wheels because tri- means three.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Prefixes Worksheet or the Greek and Latin Roots Worksheet for a word-parts mini-unit.
