Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A mixed metaphor clumsily combines two different metaphors that do not fit together, like ‘We’ll burn that bridge when we come to it.’ This worksheet teaches students to spot mixed metaphors and to fix them by choosing a single clear image.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box explains mixed metaphors with a confusing example and a fixed one. Section A has eight phrases to label as ‘mixed’ or ‘clear.’ Section B on page 2 has four short responses, including fixing and writing a mixed metaphor.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with the label for every phrase and sample responses. The worksheet pairs well with the Similes and Metaphors and Idioms worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and review what a mixed metaphor is.
Label each phrase ‘mixed’ or ‘clear’ in Section A on page 1.
Answer the four short-response questions in Section B on page 2.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Similes and Metaphors Worksheet.
