About this worksheet
Magic e, also called silent e, is a silent e at the end of a word that makes the vowel before it say its long name, as in cape or kite. This worksheet teaches the CVCe pattern and how adding a silent e changes a short-vowel word into a long-vowel word.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box explains the magic e rule with examples. Section A asks students to add a silent e to eight words and name the long vowel sound it creates. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for every item. The worksheet pairs well with the Long and Short Vowels and Vowel Teams worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and review the magic e rule.
Add a silent e to each word in Section A on page 1 and name the long vowel sound.
