What this assessment checks
The three things a student needs before vowel teams make any sense:
- Hearing the difference between a short and a long vowel sound
- Adding silent e and reading the vowel that results
- Knowing that y takes a long e or long i sound at the end of a word
How to use it
Use it as an end-of-unit check on short and long vowels, or as a placement check at the start of the year. Section B is the one to watch: a student who can hear vowel sounds but cannot apply silent e will read new words but misspell them.
Reading the results
Section A measures hearing, Section B measures the pattern, and Section C measures a rule most students are told once and never revisit. Strong A with weak B is the common profile: the student hears the sounds but does not yet connect them to the spelling signal, and needs word building rather than more listening. In Section C, y says long e at the end of a two-syllable word and long i at the end of a one-syllable word.
