About this worksheet
Every vowel – a, e, i, o, u – can make a long sound or a short sound. A long vowel says its name (the long a in cake), and a short vowel makes a quick sound (the short a in cat). Often a silent e makes the vowel long. This worksheet teaches young readers to hear and label the two.
Section A gives eight words (rain, net, kite, box) and asks students whether the underlined vowel is long or short, balanced four and four. The reference box teaches the difference with cat/cake and bed/bee pairs not reused in the items.
Section B applies the skill: students confirm a long vowel says its name, classify the vowels in cake and bed, write words with long-o and short-a sounds, and recall what often makes a vowel long. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is foundational for reading and spelling.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and say cat then cake so students hear short and long a.
Complete Section A independently – have students say each word and listen to the vowel.
Work Section B item 14 together: a silent e often makes a vowel long.
