Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Loaded language refers to words chosen specifically to trigger strong emotional responses. Positively loaded words suggest something admirable or favorable, while negatively loaded words suggest something harmful or unfavorable. Writers, advertisers, and politicians use loaded language to shape how an audience feels about a topic before it has time to think critically.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference defines loaded language with examples of both positive and negative types, using sentences that show the contrast. Section A has eight individual words, and students write P for positively loaded or N for negatively loaded.

Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions, including rewriting a loaded sentence with neutral language and writing two sentences about the same topic using opposite loading. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box and compare the positive and negative example sentences.

Complete Section A on page 1, writing P or N for each word.

Discuss real examples of loaded language from advertising or news headlines.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Connotation and Denotation Worksheet or the Propaganda Techniques Worksheet.
