About this worksheet
Litotes is a figure of speech that makes a point by denying its opposite, such as saying ‘she’s not a bad singer’ to mean she is good. It is a form of understatement and the opposite of hyperbole, which exaggerates. This worksheet helps students recognize litotes and restate each example in clear, plain words.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences that each use litotes, and students write what each one really means. The reference box teaches the device with different examples, so the assessed sentences stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to define litotes, contrast it with hyperbole, interpret a common example, and write a sentence of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on hyperbole and connotation.
How to Use This Lesson
