About this worksheet
Jargon is the special vocabulary used by people who share the same job, sport, or activity. The words are clear to people inside the group but can confuse outsiders, and they let experts communicate quickly and exactly. This worksheet teaches students to recognize jargon and the field it belongs to.
Section A gives eight jargon words (touchdown, ingredient, download) and asks students to name the field that uses each. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘dribble’ from basketball and ‘diagnosis’ from medicine, which are not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define jargon, explain why it is useful within a field, why it confuses outsiders, and to give a jargon word of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill helps students adjust their word choice to their audience.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and name jargon from two fields students know.
Complete Section A independently – have students picture who uses each word most.
Work Section B item 12 together: share a jargon word from a hobby and define it.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
