About this worksheet

A hypocorism is an affectionate nickname, usually a shorter or friendlier form of a longer name. This worksheet teaches how nicknames form and has students match nicknames to their longer names.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box explains the idea with examples. Section A has eight nicknames. Section B on page 2 has four short questions.

Page 3 is a complete answer key. The worksheet pairs well with the Word Origins and Prefixes and Suffixes worksheets.

How to Use This Lesson

Write the longer name for each nickname in Section A on page 1.
