Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Homographs are sneaky vocabulary words: same spelling, very different meanings. A ‘pitcher’ might throw a fastball or pour your lemonade. A ‘bat’ might fly out of a cave or hit a baseball. Without context, the word is ambiguous – so this worksheet trains students to read the full sentence and use the surrounding clues to pin down which meaning is in play.

Section A gives students 8 sentences with the homograph in ALL CAPS – paired sentences for PITCHER, BOW, LEAN, and WIND – and asks them to write the meaning that fits each sentence. Section B uses 6 different homographs (PARK, BAT, RING) in matched sentence pairs so students see the same trick across more words.

The reference box at the top of page 1 defines homograph, distinguishes it from homophone (sound-alike), and walks through MATCH (a stick for lighting fire / a contest between teams). Page 2 is a complete answer key in compact format with the correct in-context meaning for each item.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students why one word can mean two different things; emphasize that the sentence around the word tells you which meaning is meant.

Work Section A independently; encourage students to underline the sentence clue that pinpoints the meaning (e.g., ‘threw a fastball’ tells you PITCHER is a baseball player).

Move to Section B and model item 9 (‘PARK has many trees’) vs. item 10 (‘PARK the car’); show that the first PARK is a noun (place) and the second is a verb (action).

Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Optional extension: ask students to find a homograph in a book they are reading and write the two meanings on a sticky note.
